What is the difference between the Dermapen (a type of needling device) and the Dermatech Pen?
The main difference is the amount of needles and the size of the needles in the heads. The Dermapen has 11 needles in the top of their treatment head and Dermatech Pen has 36 micro needles, it basically means that the needles in the Dermapen have a slightly larger circumference (a bigger needle) and they are creating a larger punture into the skin which means that you could experience more pain when you’re having that treatment and the likelihood that it would cause blood is also quite high.
What we offer (with our Dermatech Pen) is called micro-needling. The needles are not as thick in diameter, you do not need to use numbing cream and smaller punctures are made within the skin.
The latest research has said that when you are doing micro needling you will actually get a better infusion of product into the skin tissue than you do with a larger circumference needles. A larger puncture or bleeding when you’re doing needling will limit the amount of ingredients that are being infused into the skin.
Germaine de Capuccini completed clinical trials with a professional product called Epidermal Growth Factor (similar to PRP or ‘vampire facial’) where they did shallow needling and deep needling and then they measured the amount of EGF within the skin tissue. They found there was a higher absorption into the tissue that had been micro needled. The less blood and the more punctures at a smaller diameter are therefore going to increase the active ingredients getting in the skin.
It also gives you just as much collagen induction (one of the main reasons for needling) and the less trauma you have on the skin the less likely you are of stimulating melanocytes,
(which is what causes the darker patches) because the melanin is a protector so as soon as there is trauma the melanocyte is activated.
That is the main point of difference of Dermatech (our shallow needling device) from Germaine de Capuccini.
