What Causes Dry Skin?

Are you tired of dealing with dry, lacklustre skin? As a skincare therapist with over three decades of experience, I am here to guide you towards celebrating the skin you're in. Let us delve into the causes of dry skin and how you can effectively combat it.

Discover the Secrets to Healthy, Hydrated Skin: Understanding Dry Skin

Dry skin, or what we refer to as lipid dry skin, occurs when the skin lacks essential lipids rather than water. It's crucial to differentiate between dry skin and dehydrated skin. If you're interested in learning more about dehydration, be sure to check out my video on the topic. In this discussion, we'll focus on dry skin and the role lipids play in maintaining its health.

What causes the breakdown of lipids in our skin

One major culprit is the skincare products we use. Using the wrong skincare can strip away the natural oils that act as protective films on the skin's surface. Visualise these natural oils, or lipids, as a shield, much like the cling film we use to protect food in the fridge. Our bodies produce these lipids naturally, but we can also acquire them through our diet by consuming foods like salmon, avocado, almonds, and olive oil. This is why people in Mediterranean regions often have beautiful, healthy skin that isn't plagued by dryness.

How to combat dry skin

Firstly, we must address both internal and external factors. Internally, we need to boost our intake of essential fatty acids, elevating the oil levels in our skin from within. For our external skincare routine, it is essential to avoid harsh cleansers. Take a closer look at your cleanser. If it's a foaming cleanser, an exfoliating cleanser, or one containing acids, it may be stripping away your natural lipids and protective film. Always opt for a gentle cream or milk cleanser that adds essential fatty acids and natural lipids back into your skin.

Incorporating an essential fatty acid oil into your skincare routine can also work wonders. Personally, one of my favorites is the Germaine de Capuccini elixir. With just a few pumps of this nourishing oil, you can spread it across your skin, applying it after your treatment serum or before your moisturiser. You can even add a touch of it before applying makeup. Essential fatty acids are especially crucial for individuals over 30 due to the direct link between a drop in estrogen levels and the decline of essential fatty acids in the skin.

Importance of choosing the right moisturiser

Many of us gravitate towards light, fluid moisturisers, but as we age, they may not provide sufficient protection. On the other hand, you don't want something heavy and overwhelming. Striking the right balance is key. That's why I adore the Germaine de Capuccini Supreme Cream. Not only does it effectively combat wrinkles as part of the Timexpert Rides Wrinkle Range, but it also contains essential fatty acids and natural lipids. This unique formula protects your skin without leaving it feeling heavy, minimises dryness, and fights wrinkles beautifully.

To further address dryness, consider incorporating the correct exfoliator into your skincare routine. Two of my personal favourites are enzyme exfoliants and natural acids. If you'd like to learn more about them, be sure to watch my video. The Glycocure Retexturising Booster Concentrate has won my heart, it is a natural exfoliating serum, enriched with glycolic acids that can be used daily to hydrate the skin and eliminate dry, dead skin buildup, effectively reducing dryness.
