Unveiling the Power of Hyaluronic Acid | Understanding the Differences

Let us delve into a journey to discover the secrets to radiant skin & uncover the secrets behind its transformative effects and celebrate the beauty of your skin like never before!

I'm Tess Walls, a devoted skin therapist, on an exploration to unravel the mystery surrounding hyaluronic acid, and discover the truth: Are all hyaluronic acids created equal?

Despite its name, hyaluronic acid is far from harsh. In fact, it's a powerful hydrating agent that draws moisture to the skin and locks it in. To help you visualise this, imagine your skin as a cup of water with a thin film or protective layer on top, like cling film or plastic wrap, sealing in all the precious moisture. When this film is compromised, dehydration can occur. But when water is abundant in the skin, it creates a plump, dewy, and healthy complexion. If you would like to learn more about dehydration, be sure to check out my separate video dedicated to this topic.

Hyaluronic acid works its magic in three key areas of the skin: the surface where the film is formed, the middle where it replenishes the skin's water tanks, and the lower level where our skin's structural components reside.

Now, let's discuss the role of hyaluronic acid. It not only draws moisture into the skin but also holds it there. However, it's essential to consider the type of hyaluronic acid you're using.

Are all hyaluronic acids the same?

The answer is no. Approximately 95% of hyaluronics available on the market are categorised as a high molecular weight. Picture these as larger molecules that primarily work on the surface, focusing on locking moisture in. A high molecular weight hyaluronic acid is beneficial for the skin, but my preferred choice includes three molecular weights: high, medium, and low.

Each weight corresponds to a specific size. High sits on the surface, medium fills the water tanks within the skin, and low penetrates deeply, enveloping the skin's ageing fibres like protective bubble wrap. This comprehensive approach shields these fibres and helps prevent their breakdown. When choosing a hyaluronic acid, prioritise products that contain these three molecular weights to target all the necessary areas.

Another factor to consider is the percentage of hyaluronic acid in the product. Many available options contain less than 10% or even less than 5% hyaluronic acid. It is crucial to be aware of the percentage to ensure optimal results.

Now, let me introduce you to one of my most beloved products—Germaine de Capuccini's 100% Hyaluronic Acid with three molecular weights. I personally use it daily, and it never disappoints. Just a tiny amount of this gel-like formula goes a long way. It feels lightweight, non-sticky, and immediately quenches the skin's thirst. With its high, medium, and low molecular weights, it not only seals and locks in moisture but also targets ageing fibres, replenishes the water tanks within the skin, and fortifies the protective film. This is the epitome of an ideal hyaluronic acid.

Key to selecting a hyaluronic acid product

First, ensure it has a high percentage of hyaluronic acid. Second, opt for one that includes three molecular weights. Lastly, pay attention to the consistency—it should feel refreshing and create a protective film without any stickiness or discomfort. Rest assured, a quality hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types.
